Joseph asks…
Why are low carb diets bad?
If protein has the same amount of calories per gram as carbohydrates (4cal per 1g). For fat loss what is the difference if most of the calories consumed were from unsaturated fats and complete proteins? Would you be more hungry? are proteins digested quicker? im a little confused!?
And i know as long as there is a negative energy balance you will lose weight, im just baffled about the protein and carb side of it?
Joe answers:
Carbohydrates are sugars, and starches (which are converted to sugars in the body).
If you don't get enough carbs, your body starts metabolising stored fats to create them, to stop your blood sugar getting too low.
While this is happening, you can eat any amount of protein & fat but your body cannot process it to store as additional fat. It's a metabolic quirk.
The big problem with low carb diets is you still need a balanced diet with the appropriate amounts of fibre & vitamins etc., and excess fats & cholesterol from food still cause plaque build up in blood vessels.
They can work, but you need to be ultra-careful not to shorten your life in the process.

How Can I Get Skinny?
I'm sixteen years old and I have tried the following methods for reducing my weight:
Low-fructose diet
Low-carbohydrate diet
Low-fat diet
Reduced Calorie: 1200
Reduced Calorie: 1500
Calorie Cycling: 1500 one day, 1200 the next, 1400 the next, 1700 the next, then start over & repeat.
70% of diet as vegetables, 2-3 servings of fruit, average weight loss & health diet
Slim-Fast shakes & knock off brand weight-loss shakes
Starvation
Work-out videos
Karate lessons
Volleyball conditioning
Wrestling conditioning
Cross-country conditioning
Diet Pills: Slim Quick, Hoodia, Green Tea, Lipodrene
Smoked cigarettes
Alcohol
Green Tea, Rooibos Tea, Coffee
Exercise: Elliptical, treadmill, pilates, weight-loss videos, resistance bands
All of the above is off the top of my head, I know there is a bit more. For my entire life I've struggled with my weight. Even when I was 3 or 4 my mom had me in gymnastics, ballet, and tap dancing to try to get me to lose weight. I'm a yo-yo dieter and, I'll be honest, I've been everywhere from 160lbs to 232lbs for the past 4 years. I've never been skinny other than before age 1. I saw pictures of me as a baby and at age 1 I began to get fat. I've also tried purging but I've had little luck because I'm not good at making myself throw up because I likely messed up my vomiting reflex years back when I attempted suicide by overdosing, which resulted in me throwing up for several hours until they had to put something into my I.V. drip in the E.R. to get me to stop throwing up. I also have major depressive disorder which might make it more difficult for me to lose weight for a chemical imbalance reason or something. As a side note, I don't have credit card access so I can't do any online gimmicks that require money.
So where do I go now? Should I just give up?
Oh also, as a side note I've read a lot of books on nutrition and weight loss. But I still have problems reducing my body fat.
Joe answers:
With all your problems I would consult a doctor because honestly... Getting help from internet bloggers isn't the best way to lose weight for all you know they could be killing you.
Also, I am 16 and I weigh 170ish pounds and I am ok with it. I don't ever exercise (yes I know it is bad for me), but I maintain my weight by just eating regular food.
The best way to lose weight is to go out and play a sport with your friends or sign up to play with your church, local gym, or whatever. This is because your METABOLISM increases, which will allow you to have fun and lose weight without you even noticing.
Reduced calorie counts are not that great. You should ALWAYS at LEAST eat 1500 calories a day as an ADULT. As a TEEN you should be eating 2000-3000 calories every day. I eat around the 2700 mark. This is because teenagers need to grow into their adult form, which means that teens need more hormones and hormones to be excreted need food. Do not drink alcohol because all it does is make you lose your metabolism and get fatter. Cigarettes are not that great because you will just die by cancer by the age of 50.
Ok well honestly don't trust my answer, nor anyone else's here. For all you know someone might be impersonating a doctor and giving you shit information. Go meet a PHYSICIAN/DOCTOR first! Then go to a dietitian/nutritionist. Honestly you don't need to even go to a doctor because you need to love your body. You only have one. I don't care if you think your fat. LOVE IT. All that doctor stuff I said is for people who are usually adults.
Susan asks…
Why are so many women fat these days?????
Have programmes like Look Good Naked and adverts like Dove, etc now made it acceptable for women to live unhealthy, sedentry lifestyles, happy with their bloated lard?
I am not saying stick thin women are the ideal, but i can't help thinking that at a time when we have never been so aware of the importance of healthy eating and exercise, why are 2 in every 3 women classed as overweight or obese?
Is it becuase of those horrible b!tch manuals like Cosmo and Glamour, etc which trade fact for entertainment and write about a load of diets (none of which work) which are sold to women insecure and gullable enough to buy and beleive them?
Why do they not realise that there are no quick fixes to weight loss and that to lose weight, you just need to stop eating sh!t, eat healthy foods, exercise rigorously and regularly and give it some time and commitment?
It is sickening.
What is your opinion? (And yes, I am aware that a lot of men are fat too, but this isn't my question).
I have "singled" out women because I find women attractive - but not when they resemble Mrs Blobby.
Joe answers:
Dieting can make you fat! Women have been encouraged to diet for years now. From the minute you get a small belly at the age of nine or ten and your breasts start forming you are made conscious of your shape. Once you fall into this trap it is a vicious circle, you hop from one diet to another, one exercise Regine to another.
If we just encouraged our children to love their bodies whilst they are forming and except this as normal you would probably see more healthy happy well balanced teenagers and, of course, adults.
Holding up images of body shapes which are not obtainable, airbrushing and distorting photos; designers who make clothes to fit mannequins rather than people, etc. All adds to the pressure.
Most of the really fat people I know have low self esteem and quite often hide behind their weight.
I don't think most of the girls in the Dove campaign are grossly over weight.
Womens bodies are made for carrying children, their stomachs are supposed to be softer than a mans. The pelvis is wider to allow for child birth. The breasts are for lactating. This is part of what we are.
Until we all grow up as a society and take all this on board, women will continue to diet and binge and not only ruin their figures but their health in later life.
